Understanding VAT & GST
Value Added Tax (VAT) and Goods & Services Tax (GST) are consumption taxes applied to the sale of goods and services. They are collected at each stage of the supply chain and ultimately borne by the end consumer.
VAT vs GST: What's the Difference?
VAT (Value Added Tax)
Used in Europe, UK, and many other countries. Applied at each stage of production and distribution. Businesses can reclaim VAT on purchases. Common in EU countries with rates ranging from 17% to 27%.
GST (Goods & Services Tax)
Used in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, and Canada. Similar to VAT but may have different structures. Some countries use a single rate while others have multiple tiers.
Common VAT/GST Rate Structures
- ๐Standard Rate: Applied to most goods and services (typically 15-27%)
- ๐ท๏ธReduced Rate: Lower rate for essential items like food, books (5-14%)
- โญSuper-reduced Rate: Very low rate for specific necessities (2-4%)
- ๐Zero Rate: 0% tax but businesses can still reclaim input VAT
- ๐ซExempt: No VAT charged and input VAT cannot be reclaimed
